Kjell Carlstrom is a Finnish rider who rides for team Liquigas. His primary duty is to protect and ride for Ivan Basso and Vincenzo Nibali. He said that the Tour of California has been "really hard so far, and not just because of the weather, but a lot of guys are really motivated and are going really good now."
Kjell described the first 90 minutes of stage 4 as being "like a Tour de France start. Flat out. Really intense. It was quite hard. There will be a lot of tired guys tonight."
There is no doubt about that. In fact Kjell averaged 358w for 10 minutes on the day's first 'king of the mountain' climb. In the first hour of racing action Kjell averaged 288w, or a normalized power of 318w. His maximum 5-minute power value of 373w came on the first king of the mountain as well.
Kjell predicts that stage 5, "should be a sprinters stage, it is a long stage at 218 km." From there he will be focused on the time trial and then try to help his teammates get top ten finishes when the Tour of California wraps up Sunday.
